1970's Piaget "Golden Hammer" Tonneau Automatic

“Golden Age of T.V.”

This is an absolutely wild solid 18K gold Piaget with a full hammered or “florentine” finished television dial automatic statement piece.

So if you’re looking for something discrete, this ain’t it. A glance at this watch is only one step removed from staring into the sun. And while the idea of a solid gold wrist brick volleying every photon of light hither and thither may seem like too much, I would argue that it is just right.

Looking a bit closer, this watch is all about its extroverted details. Its 32mm case, dial and bracelet are dripped completely clasp to clasp in an eye watering hammer finish, made even more spectacular by how the metal has achieved an almost rosy patina after 50 years. Its gold dauphine hands, a signature of Piaget’s design language, clearly denote the time as they promenade among twelve faceted and high polished applied indices. Let’s also not forget charming blue cabochon sapphire crown as well. This, all while graciously letting its wearwer know that in this golden world, we are still beholden to the date of the month.

Inside, the maison cut no corners. Powered by the 12P1 automatic movement, the caliber was once the thinnest of its kind back when it was launched in 1960. Outfitted with an off-centered oscillating 18K gold weighted micro rotor and coming in at 2.3mm thin, Piaget was clearly having fun outshining itself with this one. The brand has since been known for creating the world’s most slender, functional and well finished movements in all of watchmaking.

The Details

The case, dial and bracelet are in amazing shape. The bracelet has no kinks and is silky smooth inside and out. The dial has minimal aging or blemish. Two Swiss hallmarks for 18K gold are present and clear on case flank and back. The watch remains unpolished to our eyes. The clasp opens and secures with confident intent. The watch runs well and keeps accurate time. There are removable links as well. This will fit up to a 7.25 inch wrist.
